Live chat, chatbots and AI assistants: what is the difference?

A chat bubble does not tell you who, or what, will answer. Understanding the difference between human live chat, a rule-based chatbot and an AI assistant helps you choose a process that suits your customers.

Human live chat

Live chat connects the visitor with a person when someone is available. It can be useful for questions that need judgement, clarification or a conversation about a specific request.

Outside staffed hours, the same interface may collect a message. Make it clear whether a person is currently available and what the visitor can do next. Do not imply an immediate human reply if the service is unattended.

Rule-based chatbots

A rule-based bot follows a defined path. It might present options, collect agreed details or send visitors to the right form or page.

This can work well when the task is narrow and predictable. The limits should be clear, with a route out of the flow when the visitor’s request does not fit.

AI assistants

An AI assistant can respond more flexibly to natural-language questions, using the information and instructions supplied to it. That flexibility also makes boundaries and testing important.

Decide what it can answer, what it should avoid, when it should hand over and what information it should collect. An assistant should not invent prices, promise actions it cannot perform or encourage visitors to share sensitive details unnecessarily.

Choose the customer journey first

Start with the enquiries you receive most often. If people need a person, a staffed chat process may be appropriate. If they need a simple next step, a short form or guided flow may be enough.

Review privacy, data handling, accessibility and ongoing costs alongside the conversation itself. Then test realistic questions, unclear requests and situations outside the agreed scope.

There is no need to promise SEO gains or automatic sales growth to justify a chat tool. The useful measure is whether it helps customers get accurate information and reach an appropriate next step. Our AI voice-agent demonstration shows a separate example of how an automated receptionist can handle a limited enquiry.
